duomaxwell: (can't get away)

He remembered a headache when he'd woken far too early for his liking. It was a bad one, too. All of neck ache and tired eyes and not being able to look at even the flickering of a torch light without wincing.

But the headache became a distant thought when Duo's morning when from strange to stranger in a matter of minutes.

As soon as he opened the door to his room he knew something was wrong.

The common room was full of people. Familiar faces, faces he hadn't seen in years and faces he'd seen only a few months ago. All of them were talking, but none of them had voices he could hear. He stared at them at first, just watching as they passed him by one one by one. The store owner that he stole from more times than he should have when he was little. The little boy he argued with constantly when he was going to school for that short time. The mechanic who helped fix his bike when he crashed it six months ago. Hilde. Trowa. Cathrine. Some laughing, some frowning, some just chattering on as if everything was normal. All of them there but... not.

The longer he stared the more he realized that they weren't solid. At all.

This wasn't real. Or... was it? The wall of the castle was still cold and rough beneath his fingers. The floor flat and solid beneath his feet. None of it made any sense.

And then he saw something that made his heart sink. Just at the exit of the common area, black robes and a warm smile and everything he missed about that man who had been in his life for such a short time.

"Father Maxwell... ?"

He didn't even realize he'd breathed the name until it was out in the air. All at once the fading image of the man turned and left the area. Duo's feet were moving before he could stop himself, voice crying out like a frightened child.

"Father!"

He rounded the corner, only to find Father Maxwell gone, replaced by more ghost-like figures of people moving about. The familiar black robes were lost to the ethereal crowd. Duo stumbled to a halt, back hitting the stone wall just before he slid down it. No tears fell, but his heart ached so much he thought for sure it was going to explode from his chest.

"What the hell is going on...?"

(ooc: backdated to the start of the dream event. Anyone who touches Duo will likely get some very disconnected and oddly scattered images of people they don't know, but no solid memories like other people affected by the event.)

Toph knew she found the courtyard through various senses. She could smell the fresh air, hear the birds, and feel the warm sunlight and cool breeze. The hard stone from the castle faded into softer walkway stone as she moved out into the yard. When her feet touched the grass, she smiled to herself. No longer was the resonance of vibration from the earth surging out and back at her with all its strength. Instead, it met resistance and the grass muffled her senses as it tickled her feet, creating a sort of static for her until it gave way under her soles to let foot meet soil and allow the reverberations communicate to her nearly half a second later than solid ground.

It was a strange sensation, but she welcomed it. It calmed her, and she continued to smile while she moved to what she thought was a nice spot.

She breathed calmly and evenly as she took her stance. One move, another, and then a third, and a perfectly shaped chaise rose up from the ground. She felt proud of herself as she moved to it and lay down, body lying comfortably against the contour of the grass-covered reclining seat.

Once decidedly comfortable, Toph pulled a flask from her belt and took a drink from it. Nice, cool water. She'd stolen the idea from another castle inhabitant and had made one out of a chunk of metal ripped from her bed frame. He used his for naughty juice; she used hers for water.

Toph felt a little guilty. Most of the castle was trying to figure out how to get out of there. She, though, wasn't putting so much effort into it. Sure, she wanted to leave, but what could she do? She'd promised a new friend that she wouldn't go far without eyes to help her spot the monsters she couldn't detect. While she wanted to do her part of the exploring and searching for a way home, she didn't want to be useless in a fight against a flying shadow with claws.

There were very few times that Toph would admit her blindness to be a hindrance. A skirmish against the monsters that moved without contact or sound was one of those very few times.

"I'll just wait for a friend," she told no one before closing her eyes and laying her head back against her arm.

So he's taken to spending quite a bit at time in the common area of the residential chamber. Usually? Chilling out at the table or finding a nice little niche to settle in. Right then? He'd found a stone bench near a window that looked out onto the courtyard. On the opposite bench, a green-gray crate with numbers on it and a packing label. Someone got a package today. How? Probably a good question.

He'd gotten it the night before at the fountain while he was still restlessly awake. Didn't really take him long to figure out what had happen once he decided to throw a coin in and make a wish but he didn't think for a second that it would work. About two hours later? He asked again. Past midnight.

Now. It was late afternoon and he'd held off from indulging long enough. He settled onto the window seat, propped a leg up on the opposite stone ledge and plucked an apple from the crate of perfectly ripe fruit. Strawberries, mangoes, apricots, grapes, apples and pears. Perfect. He took a bite out of the apple, sighing contently.

So he'd lost his nerve for a spell. So those damn Shadows sapped a bit of his courage away. Didn't bother him so much right now. He'd just have this and enjoy his little birthday eating, drinking and being merry. Like you're supposed to do.

"Bottoms up." He said, drinking the last out of his flask before looking to the bottle to fill it back up.

[OOC: A window seat are common structures in castles. They look like this. Feel free to join Duo and have a drink, eat some good food, he's happy to share and plenty to go around. Also I may prefer prose but you can also respond in comment spam. I really don't care either way.]

Everyone's waking up at once, covered in bits of rubble, temporarily without abilities and with a lurking headache. The castle looms around them, irrepressibly gray, huge and silent. The only noises are the people, rustling as they extract themselves from their sarcophagi and look for exits along the arching walkways.

Better take a look around, and see if anyone else knows what's going on.
