She was quickly losing her patience. How long had she spent in the common room and wandering the living area halls, listening, feeling, asking for her friends? It was perhaps the thirteenth hour of however many days that she'd searched, and unfortunately it, like all the rest of her effort, was in vain.

First was Duo. She noticed he was missing the first time he didn't seek her out to check on her and just spend the day doing nothing. Then what he'd said about Haku came to mind and she really began to worry. Next, the younger Duo was said to have never returned from something or another. Drat.

The Earthbender rolled her thoughts around in her head a while longer before she nodded in solidity of her decision.

She quickly downed her drink and rose from her seat and began her stomping trek down the halls. She was on a mission- find her friends, whatever it took.

Early morning. The sun wasn't due up for another three hours, at the minimum.

Still, the shadows were up and about, moving around, seeking and searching for the poor lost souls that happened to be caught out at such an inconvenient time. They were easy prey, and the shadows had a quota to meet.

And Toph? Well, Toph had barely gotten the hang of being human, much less being a shadow. Some inkling of her former self remained intact under the darkness and it plagued at her repugnant coating of evil.

As she had been, Toph was hard headed. She didn't give up and was tough as nails, even against something that destroyed her from the inside out AND outside in. Even as more and more of her was consumed by the shadows taking over her being, something kept screaming at her to get help, get better. She was unsure how for the most part.

Then, a hunting trip took them closer to the fountain than most of them willed to go. The water, it burns! they warned, hissing amongst them and to her. Warn the new shadow. Teach the new shadow.

The new shadow didn't listen. The new shadow only remembered the safety and security of the fountain and the magic healing it provided for her and her friends when they'd been attacked. Maybe, just maybe, it could do the same once more. Would it lend a wayward, lost shadow relief?

She ignored the hissing and screeching as they called to her. She didn't want what they had to offer. She wanted healing. When she fell into the water, it was a bit more than she could handle.

Early morning, before the sun was even in the sky, a loud, blood curling scream echoed through the halls and rooms adjacent to the fountain. It was a painful experience for a shadow- feeling the darkness molded to the body and soul tearing away, melting, being cleansed and bleached and cauterized and torn to shreds.

By the time the screaming faded into deep, gasping breaths, the young girl was on her hands and knees in the water. She was dripping, more with sweat than fountain water, and something she couldn't identify. Something heavy, radiating a strange cold heat and nothingness that seemed to evaporate more than it dripped.

She noticed it was silent. No more could she hear the constant chatter, hissing, screeching, roaring and barking of the shadows on their own level of hearing. Had it worked? Had the fountain worked? After all that, it better.

The small Earthbender dragged herself to the solid stone, collapsing against the wall and curling in on herself. Her body ached all around. She couldn't tell if anything was bruised or broken on the surface, but from what she could feel, everything was whole and healthy... just... she could feel the sting in her neck and the ache in her limbs from events she couldn't recall.

She was tired and weak. Without anything left to run her, the girl quickly and quietly drifted off to sleep.

Toph is walking. She's not sure where, or why, only that she is.

Thought processes escape her as the dark creatures move around her. She's walking with other shadow monsters, and they do nothing to attack her.

This makes no sense.

A shadow pauses at her shoulder and hisses. It's almost as if it's speaking with her, and some small, distant piece of her left behind in a storage room is terrified that she can understand it. But now, Toph pays no mind to it and simply follows orders.

They're on a hunt.

The scent of mortal castle dwellers is fresh in the hall. Someone had been through it not very long ago, and they were out to find them, if they could. They didn't know who it was or if they were even still around, but the orders remained.

Hunt. Find. Retrieve. Serve the Queen.

Her head falls back as she moves and she lets out a noise that's half a moan and half a cry of pain to the detectable range of mortal hearing. She's doing her best to obey the order, partially because her non-body is forcing her to do it, and partially because her mind can't stop her.

It's likely to be a strange, probably disturbing sight to see the strong-willed girl meandering mindlessly and amongst the shadows, at least to the people who know her... and there is no question that it's possibly sickening to those who were unfortunate enough to see her lifeless body for themselves. The castle is putting its dead to work, whether she wants it or not.

Scraaaaaape. Scraaaaaaaaaaaape. Scraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaape.

Ker-KLUNK Ker-KLUNK Ker-KLUNK

...

Scraaaaaaaaape...

If one were to follow the sound, they'd find a small girl working her hardest at pulling a large lump of metal- probably twice her size or more- down the hall, towards her room in the living area.

Although it was obvious it took some effort for her to move it, it seemed as if it wasn't taking too much out of her and she was getting some distance with it.

Soon, though, she determined that it was break time, and relaxed her hold on the chunk. She leaned against it and panted, wiping sweat from her forehead.

Geeze. How much farther until she got to her room?

Duo was moving through the halls out towards the stairs that lead towards the stairs which lead to the trolley system. He was armed, gun drawn and moving in haste as if something was after him. Suddenly, he ducked down in the hole where that box was and looked up and around. Was it a game? Was he just playing around and training himself? That's certainly what it looked like to a casual observer. After all, for those who knew him it wouldn't be outside of his usual behavior.

He looked up and around, looking for something anxiously. He then grabbed at his backwards baseball cap and ducked suddenly as if someone had thrown something at him, or shot at him. If this was a pretend training game, he was really playing the part.

But it wasn't. To him? He was on the run, a half dozen or so enemy soldiers on the war path led by Heero Yuy. One time friend and now enemy, he was outnumbered and out matched. A shot rang out when he thought he saw something back where he came from, and he leaped out of the hole he was in, dashing for the stairs. Goddamnit!

"Quatre! Wufei! Where are you guys!?"

[OOC: So this is part of Dream/Memory!plot. As in you can get some of Duo's memories transferred to your characters to have them have to relive themselves. I'm pretty flexible at how this thread goes. You can just react to what he's doing if you want and I'm posting his memories here in my journal. The memories are transferable by touch and it doesn't matter if Duo's seeing it or not.]

"AUUUUGHH!"

The scream was muffled, but still managed to echo through the chamber as it sounded from one of the sarcophagi. Whoever was in there was not doing well. At all. And a broken leg that was still in a cast but angled very awkwardly where he lay was the cause of it.

For Sokka it was not the darkness or the confined space that he noticed first after waking with a massive headache. It was the fact that he couldn't hear anyone, or anything, except himself and his own breathing. Well, breathing, and the screaming that came once the pain in his leg hit him.

Where were his friends? Where was his sister? Why was everything so damn silent? It didn't make any sense! They had been there not an hour before when he'd gone to bed with Suki! And what was this... thing he was confined in?!

Of course there were no answers, especially since he never asked any of the questions aloud (not that anyone would have been there to answer anyway), but as the pain ebbed some clarity managed to come back.

"... Katara? Suki?"

No answer. Not even the sound of a voice. Just the wind blowing through windows somewhere near by.

"Hello?! Some one get me out of here!"

Tea. The past few days were incredibly rough and all rough days call for tea. Lots and lots of tea. The well had come through and she was graced with a lovely tin of flavored tea straight from the Jade Dragon. It was a blend made specifically for the delicate senses. 'Bandit's Brew,' Iroh had called it, specially mixed just for her after she expressed an intense fondness of a fruit flavored jasmine that hadn't quite taken off the way he'd hoped.

Toph, though, found it as calming as it was delicious, as tasty as it was smooth, and it was exactly what she needed at that point in time. She'd had enough adventuring and exploring for the time being. Instead, she wanted to relax and let her injured back and shoulders heal.

Toph Bent a fire pit under the shade of the tree in the courtyard and let a small blaze grow while she crafted a sturdy pot and a set of cups out of clay. She monitored the water in the pot with the back of her hand, waiting until it had reached the perfect temperature to boil the leaves. She judged the time by smell and before long had a nicely brewed pot of rosy red tea, sweet and fruity in both taste and scent.

She poured herself a cup and hesitated before filling the other three.

The general turned tea guru had always said that the best tea in the world didn't taste half as good unless it was being shared with someone. Friends made it delicious enough, but complete strangers often added a unique zing. At first she thought he was finally hitting that nutty stage of old age. As she sat there, taking tea alone for the first time in ever, she wondered if, like everything else out of his mouth, there was some underlying wisdom that she didn't understand until... well, until she simply understood.

((Ooc: Free tea for all!))

The sun has nearly set when the attack begins.

It's quiet at first, and easy to miss. Pools of shadow form and then slowly expand, and then strange creatures of the same rise from them, their only distinguishable feature their strange, glowing eyes.

And then they move, lurching forward and spreading through out the tower, around the fountain, and across the bridge. They grab whoever doesn't run fast enough, and attack only those who attack them first. They're single-minded, but swift and strong, and escaping from them won't be easy.

And of course, elsewhere lurks their master, the Queen...

So far, Quatre hadn't gotten a chance to speak with either of his roommates. He'd spent most of his time with Haku, the Duos and Heero. Today however, he hadn't woken up until later, meaning he'd actually managed to get some sleep for once. Toph and Ratchet were both there, so he decided it might be a good time to be social. He pulled on one of the shirts he'd borrowed from Duo...his Duo, and then went over to Toph.

"Good morning. Sorry I haven't introduced myself yet, I'm Quatre."

Toph knew she found the courtyard through various senses. She could smell the fresh air, hear the birds, and feel the warm sunlight and cool breeze. The hard stone from the castle faded into softer walkway stone as she moved out into the yard. When her feet touched the grass, she smiled to herself. No longer was the resonance of vibration from the earth surging out and back at her with all its strength. Instead, it met resistance and the grass muffled her senses as it tickled her feet, creating a sort of static for her until it gave way under her soles to let foot meet soil and allow the reverberations communicate to her nearly half a second later than solid ground.

It was a strange sensation, but she welcomed it. It calmed her, and she continued to smile while she moved to what she thought was a nice spot.

She breathed calmly and evenly as she took her stance. One move, another, and then a third, and a perfectly shaped chaise rose up from the ground. She felt proud of herself as she moved to it and lay down, body lying comfortably against the contour of the grass-covered reclining seat.

Once decidedly comfortable, Toph pulled a flask from her belt and took a drink from it. Nice, cool water. She'd stolen the idea from another castle inhabitant and had made one out of a chunk of metal ripped from her bed frame. He used his for naughty juice; she used hers for water.

Toph felt a little guilty. Most of the castle was trying to figure out how to get out of there. She, though, wasn't putting so much effort into it. Sure, she wanted to leave, but what could she do? She'd promised a new friend that she wouldn't go far without eyes to help her spot the monsters she couldn't detect. While she wanted to do her part of the exploring and searching for a way home, she didn't want to be useless in a fight against a flying shadow with claws.

There were very few times that Toph would admit her blindness to be a hindrance. A skirmish against the monsters that moved without contact or sound was one of those very few times.

"I'll just wait for a friend," she told no one before closing her eyes and laying her head back against her arm.

So he's taken to spending quite a bit at time in the common area of the residential chamber. Usually? Chilling out at the table or finding a nice little niche to settle in. Right then? He'd found a stone bench near a window that looked out onto the courtyard. On the opposite bench, a green-gray crate with numbers on it and a packing label. Someone got a package today. How? Probably a good question.

He'd gotten it the night before at the fountain while he was still restlessly awake. Didn't really take him long to figure out what had happen once he decided to throw a coin in and make a wish but he didn't think for a second that it would work. About two hours later? He asked again. Past midnight.

Now. It was late afternoon and he'd held off from indulging long enough. He settled onto the window seat, propped a leg up on the opposite stone ledge and plucked an apple from the crate of perfectly ripe fruit. Strawberries, mangoes, apricots, grapes, apples and pears. Perfect. He took a bite out of the apple, sighing contently.

So he'd lost his nerve for a spell. So those damn Shadows sapped a bit of his courage away. Didn't bother him so much right now. He'd just have this and enjoy his little birthday eating, drinking and being merry. Like you're supposed to do.

"Bottoms up." He said, drinking the last out of his flask before looking to the bottle to fill it back up.

[OOC: A window seat are common structures in castles. They look like this. Feel free to join Duo and have a drink, eat some good food, he's happy to share and plenty to go around. Also I may prefer prose but you can also respond in comment spam. I really don't care either way.]

The only indication Toph had of her small, stuffy prison finally breaking open was the rush of cold, fresh air that surged in around her. Oh, thank the badgermoles, she thought as she carefully moved out of the sarcophagus and onto hard, cold flooring.

The annoyed, pained grimace fell from her face as her worst fears were confirmed- she couldn't see. Her bending was gone! But how?! What happened?! Where was she?!

All she could remember was finishing up her bedtime tea and relaxing in her room to the sound of the old general playing his-

Her thoughts stopped dead.

"Uncle? Uncle!" Nothing but her own echoes. She tried not to panic- maybe he was outside? But where was outside? Forget that, where was she? This wasn't the tea shop! It didn't smell like it. It didn't sound like it. It didn't even feel like it. Had she slept through being attacked and captured? "Sokka? Aang? Katara? ... anyone?"

No answers. She felt exposed and frightened. How many years had it been since she was this alone, this disconnected from the earth and her friends? Not without incident, she made her way to the wall, limping now, as she tried to find a way out. A door? Window? Anything?

Maybe she'd only traveled a few feet, one wall, or even an entire room. She couldn't tell through the pain in both her head and her knee. The bewildering silence and humbling lack of bending didn't improve matters. The instant she found a nice corner, she sat, back pressed firmly against the wall, feet and hands flat against the floor. If nothing else, she could wait it out, see if something happened.

[Ooc: I do not believe Toph has a tag yet, but the instant she gets one, I'll come in and fix it. ^^; ]
