| Opening Log

Everyone's waking up at once, covered in bits of rubble, temporarily without abilities and with a lurking headache. The castle looms around them, irrepressibly gray, huge and silent. The only noises are the people, rustling as they extract themselves from their sarcophagi and look for exits along the arching walkways.

Better take a look around, and see if anyone else knows what's going on.

Uh-huh. The British got kicked out in the 1700's.

Como? [She's so surprised.] That is some time from now. Last I remember, it was 1513.

[Oh.She... might be a hallucination, then, but Desmond still doesn't think so. His exploration of Ezio's memories had ended well before 1513.]

Huh. Still not as far away as 2012, though.

[Eyebrows raised.]

Is that where you're from? Or perhaps I should say when? I must admit, none of this seems possible... I find it difficult to believe I'm not in some sort of afterlife.
seventeenth: (for ▲ those doubts)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-15 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. The middle of fall in 2012.

[He grimaces at the mention of this being an afterlife, though.] That's my least favorite theory about this.

It would not explain how we are from different times. Surely, if this is death, than I would have already been here for a long time before you arrived.

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-15 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Or why there aren't more of us here.

That, too, unless this place is temporary.

Purgatorio. [Slight head tilt, watching him curiously. Do these people from the future not know this?] Where people expiate their sins before going to Heaven?
seventeenth: (to ▲ know that you know)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-16 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. [Well, now he feels silly.] I didn't really read Dante's Inferno that thoroughly.
enthusiast: ([teasing] amongst the lavender and heads)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-16 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
[smile]

It isn't in the Inferno; it's in Dante's Purgatorio. [amused] I'm glad that Dante's poetry has survived to your time, though. La Commedia is an important work. Should this place only be temporary, you should read it more carefully.

[Okay, now he feels dumb.] Heh, well, I'll keep that in mind. There might even be a copy here.
enthusiast: ([sweet] from your house we walk the rive)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
It's certainly possible. No man should pass through any world without having known the greatest literature in all creation.

[She searches his face. There's still something she's trying to place about him. His voice isn't familiar, his jaw isn't familiar, his general posture and the way he carries himself isn't familiar, but there's something about him that's still catching her, despite the hundreds of years between them. She must have hit her head at some point.]

[Desmond's not aware that he's a weirdly familiar sight to Sofia. He's amused by her apparent zeal for books and learning; she kinda reminds him of Shaun, and Leonardo.]

Well, the best way to find out is to look around. You feel up for walking?
enthusiast: ([interested] you leave me with a kiss)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-17 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Of course.

[She doesn't want to think of how long she's been in that sarcophagus, even if she doesn't feel too sore.]

Do you have places like this in 2012, Desmond?
seventeenth: (to ▲ know that you know)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-18 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but... [He shrugs.] They're old and out of style. They're mostly historical cites. Like a big museum.

[He pauses a little and thinks again. This is harder than he thought.] No one really lives in them anymore, unless it's something like Buckingham Palace.
enthusiast: ([interested] you leave me with a kiss)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-18 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I can't imagine what they've been replaced with, nor do I know what a museum is. [A considering look.] Buckingham sounds English.
seventeenth: (i've ▲ made it harder to know)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-18 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
You'd probably like museums. They're big collections of paintings, or artifacts from other time periods. [She's really starting to remind him of Shaun, actually.]

It's in England, yeah. It's where the royal family lives.
enthusiast: ([excited] thought of you)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-18 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not too familiar with current English politics, unfortunately. [Just the thought is exciting.] I would definitely like these museums, though. Do they have museums for books? My husband and I have amassed quite a collection of rare books and paintings together, among other things.
seventeenth: (for ▲ those nights)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-18 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
There are some books in museums, but usually only the old ones. Original copies and stuff.

There are libraries, though.
enthusiast: ([happy] to the church by the silent fiel)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-18 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
[smile] Well, it is hard to find original copies of books that were created to be spoken aloud, but I do have some third century books. Libraries, however, have been around for thousands of years.
seventeenth: (to ▲ know that you know)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-18 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I know that. But aren't most of the one where-- sorry, when you're from private? [He knows, from listening to Shaun drone at him, there there were some public libraries in Europe by the 1500's, but he's pretty sure it's not to the same degree.]
enthusiast: ([book] instead of in new york)

[personal profile] enthusiast 2012-01-18 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Nod. You do know some stuff after all :)] Si, hai ragione –– you are right. I owned a book shop in Constantinople, but it would be even better to see public libraries. Think of everything that could be taught, or shared amongst people!

Perhaps some day I will open one, depending on where we settle down.
seventeenth: (for ▲ those times)

[personal profile] seventeenth 2012-01-18 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Desmond grins again.] You'd probably like New York's. There's about seventy libraries anyone can use in one city alone.
