Everyone's waking up at once, covered in bits of rubble, temporarily without abilities and with a lurking headache. The castle looms around them, irrepressibly gray, huge and silent. The only noises are the people, rustling as they extract themselves from their sarcophagi and look for exits along the arching walkways.

Better take a look around, and see if anyone else knows what's going on.

Am I loving this wonderful cascade of rubble and serious damage to my wardrobe? No. Have I had worse? Yes. I'll live. [ She gives a nod in his direction. ] You?

[He could relate. He smirks just a bit at the girl's snark.]

About as good or bad as you'd expect.

Where'ya from? I can't imagine they'd be dragging people from all across the colonies. [Frankly? He has her pegged as an Uptown girl.]

You know, we're called Americans now. Which may very well still be confusing to the mother country, but there was this whole revolution thing ... Look it up. [ There's a judgy look for that. Because he sure didn't sound British but that is the only excuse for calling the U.S. the colonies. ] Or ... well. Not now look it up, obviously. But later. When we've gotten out of wherever the hell it is we are. [ She looks around at the sarcophagi as she speaks, then back to Duo. ] Where are we?

[stillshinigami]

[And... she lost him. Utterly. Completely. He stared at her for a good long moment and nodded slowly.]

Riight. Uh, hey. I'm American too, y'know. So you're from Earth, huh?

[He gives a quick look around himself.]

I have no idea. We're not in space, that's for damn sure. This castle could belong to Romefeller, but I didn't think any of them survived.

[slay]

Rom-a-who-ter? [ This is a blank look. ] Are you usually in space?

[stillshinigami]

[And a blank look is returned.]

Most people are. Space colonies--I really shouldn't have to explain this to you. One fell onto Earth four years ago in a fiery apocalypse? Remember that?

[slay]

I remember all fiery apocalyp ... apocali ... apocalypses. And that? So not one of them. [ Her arms cross over her chest. ] There are no space colonies. A couple satellites, sure, and last I checked, a rover or two. But, no colonies.

[stillshinigami]

What'dya mean no colonies? We've had em' for two hundred years.

[Whoa, okay. Something is really wrong here.]

Where're you from again?

[slay]

Before here? Scotland. Before that? California. And America was definitely not founded around the launch of space colonies, I can tell you that for -- [ A beat. She seems to put it together. There's only way that he could be from space colonies craziness while she's just north of the turn of the century. ] Oh boy.

[stillshinigami]

[Oh. Yeah. Okay. From what she's saying now he's starting to get a clear picture on why they're having such trouble communicating. No fucking way, though. It was impossible.]

Babe, I get what you're thinking but it's just impossible. It-- There's just no fuckin' way. Travel through time doesn't even work!

[slay]

And neither does me being from the 21st century and you being from space! But, gee, look, here we both are. I'm not saying -- [ She starts pacing a little, hands gesticulating widely. ] Which means we could be anywhen. These sarcophagi could be brand-spanking-new instead of out of service, for crying out loud.

[stillshinigami]

[He's about to say something, but then withdraws and considers it for a moment. He can't think of any explanation, but then his education was only so broad. He was drawing a blank until she suggested that the sarcoph's were new, or that this castle was newly built. He shook his head.]

Doesn't look like anyone's been here for a while. [He gestured to a small bit of greenery breaking through the stone wall.]

You're right though. [He grimaces at the thought of being trapped in an unknown time. Weird was how easily she accepted it all.] We're probably better off taking a good look around before coming to any more conclusions.

[slay]

Right. Time for a nice, scenic tour to find out who the hell made with the roofies and brought us here.

[stillshinigami]

Hey, as long as the view is nice. [He smiles, starting to head downwards down the tower.]

Didn't get your name, by the way. Mine's Duo.

[slay]

Buffy. Let's hope we're not stuck here long enough to need to remember it. Uh, no offense. [ Heading along with him. ]

[stillshinigami]

None taken. [He shrugs and shoves his hands in his pockets, mulling over what they've said between them.]

Okay then. What's your theory?

[slay]

Some Big Bad that packs serious enough spellwork to get its grubby fingers across dimensions.

[stillshinigami]

Spellwork?

Aaaaaand dimensions. Funny how neither of those were in the science text books. [Not that he's ever really read one.]

[slay]

As opposed to all those science textbooks that cover kidnapping with zero memory of how it happened and getting sealed inside an ancient coffin.

Heh. Or maybe they just file it under "Cosmic bullshit."

I just don't think magic really counts as a valid explanation.

[slay]

[ She stops in her stride and turns to fix him with a steady look, suddenly seeming pretty tough for a tiny little blonde girl. ]

Okay. Duo. I'm gonna break this to you in the best way that I can. I get that you, for whatever skeptical reasons, are having a hard time processing this. But, see, I don't have time for skepticism.

This just in: magic's real. And someone's gotten good enough at it to get you and I here, and a whole lot of other people.

Now, my primary interest right now is getting those people home. But, I can't do that while they've got their magic whattamajig suppressing mine. Something science? Can't do. Ever. So, either you jump on board and help me, or I find someone who's a little more in touch with what's going on around them to.

[stillshinigami]

[Way to get him to shut up. He pauses and just listens, his brows raising a bit. Now, that's not to say he believed her per say, but there is the sense that she's at lease being sincere, and completely serious.]

Hey now, that's not exactly fair. I'm eager to get home too, and yeah. I'm skeptic. Who wouldn't be?

How about you explain? First, even if I accept that magic could be involved how do you know that's what it is? And what's suppressing you? How?

I'm happy to help, y'just gotta help me out here.

[slay]

That's what I'm trying to find out. [ Her expression gets more patient, tone level as she goes on calmly explaining after a beat. ] I find out what and how, I can make it stop, and chances are after that, I can get us out. Kinda my thing. Which dials back to the magic thing, which pretty much starts and ends with years and years of experience.

[stillshinigami]

[He didn't really look all that convinced, and part of him wanted to just write her off as crazy considering her explanation was a non-explanation.]

Then it's all on you, is it? If that's the case, what am I even supposed to do?

[slay]

Been a while since I heard that. [ There's a long thoughtful pause. After a year with two thousand new Slayers, being the only one again is serious wiggins. She dismisses it. ] You can start by helping me figure out who's doing this. You do want to get out of here, don't you?
