Everyone's waking up at once, covered in bits of rubble, temporarily without abilities and with a lurking headache. The castle looms around them, irrepressibly gray, huge and silent. The only noises are the people, rustling as they extract themselves from their sarcophagi and look for exits along the arching walkways.

Better take a look around, and see if anyone else knows what's going on.

Yeah. It's Marnie. [She keeps a step behind him as they go.] Marnie Holt. Do you have one?

[Looking over his shoulder at the girl he nodded his head before looking forward once more.] Yes.

You may call me Malik if you please. Do you mind telling me where you come from, Marnie?

Malik. [She repeats it, testing the sound.] Hm. I'm from Minnesota. Why?

Minnesota? [The word tastes strange on his tongue before he shakes his head.]

I've never heard of it before. It must be from beyond my time.

[pinetreemary]

[She opens her mouth to respond incredulously, then thinks better of it.] Maybe. And you don't seem American either, so.

[dai]

I've not heard of it, but I'm sure there are many places we all come from if what I've heard thus far is true. [He takes no offense, Malik knows that he is not wise in everything and things beyond his time period are several of them.]

Care to tell me more about this place you come from?

[pinetreemary]

There's...not much to tell. We live outside Hawley- my dad and I. It's this really tiny town, I guess. I've never been anywhere else so I can't compare. [She fiddled with the end of her sleeve absently. She wished she could think of something more interesting to say, but it was true that she knew very little about the rest of the country- or even the state. She was suddenly embarrassed about that fact.] Where we live is nice, though. It's very green.

A complete comparison of my own lands then which are primarily sand. [He knew that sometimes people know much about were they lived. Take the citizens that lived within the villages and saw no other place in the world. Yet in that time, travel was different and far more harsh. Still, Malik know sometimes the best way to calm nerves was to simply talk and he hoped to assist the girl in doing so.]

Did your father have a trade?

[pinetreemary]

Where do you live? The desert? [She hums, thinking about that.] Too bad. I couldn't live on sand. I need trees. [She cracks the tiniest of smiles, as though something about that was amusing to her.]

Ah- dad's a civil engineer. [A pause, realizing this probably means nothing to her current companion.] ...he tells people where to build stuff. Helps plan cities.

[dai]

The desert is a good enough explanation. I travel around, let's leave it at that. [He arches an eyebrow at her smile and replies--trying to be kind.] You need trees? Well, the desert does have them but perhaps just not as many.

That sounds like an important job. You must be proud of him.

You're lucky. About the traveling, not the less trees. That part's awful. I probably...couldn't survive if I didn't have a tree.

[She blinks curiously at his last statement.] Should I be?

[dai]

What is your deep connection to trees?

Building cities is not a simple task. It requires a man of great skill. [But the time periods is different, still--it was a talent nonetheless.] I would think you would.

[pinetreemary]

Trees are great. Everyone knows that. You ask a lot of questions. [...yeah, that didn't sound defensive at all.]

I guess so. He's my dad. [She said it as though that one word could sum up her feelings on the matter. Was "pride" the right word?] I'm...grateful.

[dai]

I ask questions so that I can better know who I am sharing company with. [His tone replied, bristling slightly at the comment but she seemed young and children were often foolish. Not that he would state that aloud but still, the tone implied a certain annoyance.]

Grateful is kind enough. Perhaps he will show up here like many others.
