If she could hear him or not really wasn't the issue, or at least it wouldn't be once he became aware of something else. She didn't just seem unconscious. She seemed for all intents and purposes, dead. No rise and fall of her chest could be seen, no breath came past her slightly parted lips. She was still, silent, which of course meant there was absolutely no response from her either.
